Different Types of Conveyors

Conveyors are used to move objects from one place to another and are often deployed on mining sites to streamline operations. They can handle the large amounts of debris, aggregates, ores, and minerals produced on mining sites and quarries. Many different types of conveyors are used for a range of tasks onsite, with their main role being to enhance the site’s efficiency. From organising aggregate to transporting ores long distances, each type of conveyor has their place.

Different Types of Conveyors in Mining

There are two important features when it comes to discussing the types of conveyors in mining, with those being the style of conveyor belt and the function of the conveyor itself. We have compiled a list that highlights both the belts and types of conveyors.

Flat Belts

Flat belt systems are one of the most common types of conveyors and are ideal for mining and quarrying operations, designed for bulk handling with a high through put capacity. They are often used to transport aggregate and waste from mining operations. These can be wet, dry, abrasive, sticky, or sludge type materials.

Trough Belts

As the name suggests, trough belts feature a trough to hold the materials in. They are popular conveyors in mining as they are used to transport materials like ores, coals, and minerals, including over long distances and across rough terrain. The trough depth can be adjusted and made deeper, allowing them to carry more material.

Pipe Belts

Pipe belts feature an enclosed pipe and are used to transport ores, coal, and minerals over long distance like trough conveyors. The key advantages of pipe conveyors include being able to be used in tight spaces, navigate sharp turns, handle steep inclines, and reduce the dust and spillage during transportation.

Overland Conveyors

These conveyor systems, usually featuring troughs or pipes, are set up over long distance to be a cost-effective alternative to trucks. They can move more material per hour than one truck and expend less energy and labour in the process. Overland conveyors are beneficial on site as they have little to no emissions, make less noise than trucks, and don’t create dust clouds.

Stacker Conveyors

This conveyor is used when stockpiling aggregates onsite and is a popular choice for quarry conveyors. Being a more efficient choice than wheel loaders, stacked conveyors reduce the amount of dust created and the damage to aggregates in transportation. They usually feature a flat belt and on average move 1,200 tonnes of aggregate per hour.

Mobile Conveyors

Mobile conveyors can be many different types of conveyors, with a common one being the grasshopper conveyor. These mobile conveyors range in size anywhere from 10 meters to over 40 meters and are widely used to move aggregates and ores to larger conveyor systems, eliminating the need for expensive loaders while increasing productivity.
